BlackHole exploit kit developer arrested in Russia

Russian law enforcement agencies have arrested the developer of the BlackHole exploit kit. The rumors about the attacker detention appeared on Monday, October 7. The information was provided by Alex Gostev from Kaspersky Lab and Maarten Boone from Fox-IT. Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs refused to comment.

Though Computerworld reports, citing a source familiar with the investigation, that the developer of the BlackHole exploit kit, who used the name Paunch on the Web, was in fact arrested in Russia. Currently the details of the operation are not disclosed.

Europol spokesman Soren Pedersen said that the European Cybercrime Centre has been informed that a high-level cybercrime suspect has been arrested in Russia.

BlackHole exploit kit was designed to exploit vulnerabilities in the popular software, such as - Java, Adobe Reader and Flash Player. IT- experts called BlackHole one of the most dangerous cyberthreats over the past few years. RSA Security notes that approximately 75 %-80% of the cyberattacks in the last two years were carried out using BlackHole.
