Anonymous attack oil companies around the world

On Thursday, June 20, Anonymous launched a massive campaign called #OpPetrol to perform cyber attacks on international gas and oil companies around the world. Targeted companies were based in the United States, Saudi Arabia, Canada, UK, France, Russia and others. Hackers reported their plans on May 10, 2013.

On June 20 hackers performed attacks against systems of Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Jordan. As stated by Symantec experts that track the threats, Anonymous may attack as follows: perform DDoS-attack, compromise accounts of social networks, send spam and fake messages, compromise companies’ websites and servers, hijack confidential data and its further publication online, as well as sabotage servers.

Experts said that hackers may use low-orbit ion cannon (LOIC) to perform DDoS-attacks, as well as send phishing emails to get user’s credentials in social networks.

Symantec warned of possible threats and recommend monitoring the internal network, and informing employees about phishing messages.
