Jimmy Wales, the founder of the online encyclopedia "Wikipedia" offered three ways to manage the problem of blacklisting some pages of the portal by Russian authorities.
The first way is a dialogue with Russian authorities and “slavishly kowtows to whatever the Russia government wants taken out”. The second way does not require any negotiations and Wikipedia stays blocked in Russia. The third way obliges local internet-providers to block certain pages not the whole site. In this case, the online encyclopedia will be available to Russian users.
Still Wales has negative attitude towards any kind of site blocking and cooperation with censors.
“For me, being blocked is always preferable to collaborating with censors. Catering to the demands of weak and cowardly politicians - the kind who fear the spread of knowledge - is not the Wikipedia way”, - the founder of online encyclopedia said.
Wikipedia blockage is not profitable for ISPs. The fact is that some of them may not have the needed technical means to block certain pages, and they will have to close the access completely. This will cause financial losses for ISPs.
