FireEye researchers found a backdoor trojan which targets governmental systems in the Middle East and Central Asia. Malware is able to evade detection by tying its execution to multiple mouse clicks.
Experts have found that the trojan’s code contains a tag relating to the soundtrack of Batman: The Dark Knight.
The activation of BaneChant requires three left-clicks. Only after those three clicks the program starts to load a malicious code on the user’s PC.
In general, BaneChant acts just like a regular Trojans: collects information on the infected machine, and installs a backdoor to provide a remote access.
Experts state: “It attempts to: Evade sandbox by detecting human behaviors (multiple mouse clicks); evade network binary extraction technology by performing multi-byte XOR encryption on executable file; social engineer user into thinking that the malware is legitimate; avoid forensic and incidence response by using fileless malicious codes; and prevent automated domain blacklisting by using redirection via URL shortening and Dynamic DNS services”.
Attack with BaneChant starts with sending an e-mail message containing a malicious document entitled "Islamic Jihad." The file name allowed FireEye suggest that victims of the new virus are the residents of the Middle East and Central Asia. After opening the attachment and clicking on the link contained in the letter, the user is redirected to a specific site through which the connection to the C & C-server is established.
