Security experts at Symantec found over two hundred apps in Google Play infected with malware. They are mostly the apps that contain ‘XXX’ content (mainly in Japanese).
The researchers stated that the malware used the “one-click fraud” technology.
According to experts, when users try to gain access to certain content, they are asked to pay for getting premium status. Typically, users follow the links contained in these messages and visit fraudulent sites in order to find needed content.
“This is because the app is simply used as a vehicle to lure users to the scam by opening fraudulent porn sites. The app itself has no other functionality. This may fool users into feeling safe about the app and catch them off guard when launching the app,” – stated Symantec.
Symantec experts said that such attacks lasted several months, involving more than 50 different vendors. Despite the fact that Google has removed some of the malicious apps, there are already over five thousand downloads. Researchers did not manage to determine the number of users who were the victims of the fraud, so it is not known how many people paid for the services offered (service cost – about $1 million).
“We recommend downloading them from trusted sources regardless of where the apps are hosted or found. Installing a security app… is a good idea to keep your device protected as well. For general safety tips for smartphones and tablets, please visit our Mobile Security website,” – summed up Symantec.
