MITRE Corporation, known for its development of CVE vulnerability identification system, is working on changing the pattern, since there’s a great possibility that forthcoming year will bring a bigger number of officially discovered vulnerabilities.
While now only 9999 vulnerabilities can be registered per year, after changing the pattern in January 2014 there will be a possibility to assign vulnerabilities with CVE 999 999 IDs. MITRE Corporation experts suggested three possible ways of identification.
According to one of them, the CVE ID assignment will be as follows: year, then the six digit-number starting with zeros. E.g. CVE-2014-000001, CVE-2014-009999, CVE-2014-123456, etc.
The second way of identifying vulnerability is as follows: year followed by a spontaneous selection of numbers, where zeros are put before numbers 1-999. E.g. CVE-2014-0001, CVE-2014-2569, CVE-2014-324065.
Given by the experts third option suggests next way of identification of vulnerabilities: year followed by a spontaneous selection of numbers, and then tracking number, calculated by the Moon algorithm. E.g. CVE-2014-1-8, CVE-2014-569-8, etc.
In order to discuss the influence of the changes, MITRE gives consultations at the Cryptography and RSA Information Security Conference, where issues related to the new CVE systems of identifying vulnerabilities will be put under discussion.
