Facebook aided the FBI agents to bust an international criminal ring that infected 11 million computer users around the world and caused damage of about $ 850 million. Criminals infected the computer systems of Facebook users with the help of the malicious program called ‘Yahos’. Then hackers stole credit card, bank and other personal data.
Malicious program ‘Yahos’ attacked Facebook users from 2010 to October 2012. Eventually, Facebook administration helped discover the criminals.
Its "security systems were able to detect affected accounts and provide tools to remove these threats," the FBI said.
According to police, who have collaborated with the Ministry of Justice, the accused hackers employed the "Butterfly Botnet". Criminals are residents of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, New Zealand, Peru, the UK and the USA. The FBI executed numerous search warrants and conducted a raft of interviews.
