Journalist Mat Honan, who is known for working for Gizmodo and Wired, said in his blog that on August 3, 2012 unknown hackers broke into his iCloud account.
Hackers got access to journalist’s account via Apple tech support and some clever social engineering that let them bypass security questions. Later on they got into his iCloud account, reset the password and sent the confirmation message about the reset to the trash.
Apart from hacking Honan’s account hackers deleted all the data stored on his iPhone, iPad and MacBook Air. It should be mentioned that such actions are possible due to Find My Phone service, which allows users to remotely wipe all the information in case of the gadget loss.
Hackers also took control over Honan’s Twitter account, which was linked to Gizmodo’s, so crooks gained entry to that as well.
Apple representatives are now trying to recover the data from the journalist’s MacBook Air, and he tries to regain control over hacked accounts.
