U.S. Department of Justice stated that two citizens of California were accused of hacking into point-of-sale computers at Subway restaurants and adding more than US$40,000 in value to gift cards.
Shahin Abdollahi a.k.a. Sean Holdt cooperating with Thomas Wilkinson were charged with conspiracy to commit burglary and hack into computer networks. The case is now reviewed in Massachusetts District Court.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Abdollahi is a former owner of a “Subway” restaurant, as well as head of the company “POS Doctor”, engaged in sale and installation of POS-terminals in chain of restaurants across the United States. Since 2011, Abdollahi and Wilkinson hacked those terminals. Thus, at least 13 “POS Doctor” machines were hacked in Massachusetts, Wyoming and California, and adding $40 000 to the value of gift certificates of the “Subway” restaurant chain.
While hacking criminals used a built-in LogMeIn app, and paid by gift cards for purchases at “Subway” restaurants, as well as sold them on eBay and Craigslist.
