Researchers will hack iOS devices, using a modified charger

Researchers will hack iOS devices, using a modified charger

Three researchers from Georgia Institute of Technology are going present a new technology, allowing to hack any iOS device, at the Black Hat security conference. According to their statements, they will use a modified charger to upload arbitrary software to an iOS device within one minute of it being plugged in.

There is no information whether researchers will be able to upload malicious code on the system, as all iOS devices are "sandboxed" by default and do not allow running unsigned applications.

A modified charger, used by the researchers, contains a small Linux PC – BeagleBone, which has the size of a credit card. It is not clear how this device can fit in a regular iPhone or iPad charger casing anytime soon.

The hack and the charger will be demonstrated in July. Experts will reveal the details of a technology that allows to bypass Apple’s security measures, but also tell, how the company can protect their customers from such hacks.
