Five critical vulnerabilities found in Android-smartphones

Five critical vulnerabilities found in Android-smartphones

Italian security researcher Roberto Paleari has published information about the vulnerabilities in Samsung’s smartphones, operating on Android. The company was notified about the problems in January 2013 but didnt respond to the researchers messages.

Being aware of the high risk of the vulnerabilities the researcher decided not to disclose their technical details but only reported about the results of their possible misuse.

In particular, the misuse of two vulnerabilities can allow the fraudsters to install highly-privileged applications with no user interaction. Another flaw gives an opportunity to send SMS. Misusing the forth vulnerability an attacker can perform almost any action on the victim's phone, ranging from placing phone calls to sending e-mails, SMS messages, and so on. The last flaw allows attackers to change other settings of the victim's phone, such as networking or Internet settings, without the user's consent.

"All the vulnerabilities I reported can be exploited from an unprivileged local application. In other words, no specific Android privileges are required for the attacks to succeed. This allows attackers to conceal the exploit code inside a low-privileged (and apparently benign) application, distributed through Google Play or the Samsung Apps market.", Paleari noted.
