Google will pay $ 7 million for illegal interception of data transmitted over Wi-Fi

Google will pay $ 7 million for illegal interception of data transmitted over Wi-Fi

Google has signed a $ 7 million settlement with the U.S. authorities for the illegal interception of the user’s data while using the Street View program.

Google illegally gathered the information that users transmit through the Wi-Fi-networks. In particular, the collected data included the e-mails and Web site visitations. Investigation of Googles illegal activities was conducted by Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 2010.

“While the $7 million is significant, the importance of this agreement goes beyond financial terms,” Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen said in a statement. Consumers have a reasonable expectation of privacy. This agreement recognizes those rights and ensures that Google will not use similar tactics in the future to collect personal information without permission from unsuspecting consumers.

Google agreed that such activity is unacceptable and apologized to the affected users.

The company has signed a settlement with 38 American states, according to which Google will pay the penalty, and will delete all the email addresses and passwords, which were obtained from 2008 to 2010.
