Fake Chrome extension compromises Facebook profiles

Fake Chrome extension compromises Facebook profiles

Bitdefender detected a new phishing attack on Facebook users. Fraudsters sent spam e-mails to their potential victims containing a link to a malicious website. The page was the alleged Chrome Web Store offering the extension “Business Flash Player”.

Once installed on the computer malicious version of Flash Player begins to track all the online activities. When you visit your account in Facebook, malware scans cookies. If the account is active, the crooks insert various JavaScripts to perform malicious actions. For example, fraudsters can send spam messages, or post links to malicious pages in the user account.

In addition, attackers can steal cookies associated with a user account and access it from another computer.

The malware is also used to "Like" pages on the victims' behalf, post malicious links to other phishing campaigns, and send spam messages to their friends.

The pages with the large amount of УlikesФ are sold on underground forums for as much as $200 for a page with 100,000 "likes". The fact is that the pages with lots of "likes" get high ratings and with their help attackers can distribute any content and any malicious software.

BitDefender analyst Bogdan Botezatu warns that AV software is unlikely to detect the extension as a rogue, unless it uses web filters. So the threat may be stored in the browser for quite a long time.
