LinkedIn e-mail alerts erroneously considered to be spam

LinkedIn e-mail alerts erroneously considered to be spam

According to Cloudmark, a lot of LinkedIn email alerts were considered to be spam by users. Alerts contained instructions for users on how to reset the stolen passwords.

Andrew Conway, a Cloudmark researcher said: “Over 4% of the people receiving this email thought it was spam and sent it straight to the bit bucket. If LinkedIn sends out 6.5 million emails, then a quarter of a million people are congratulating themselves on avoiding spam -- and still have a compromised LinkedIn password.”

Conway stated that LinkedIn has taken all the necessary measures to ensure users that mailed letters were not spam. All letters were addressed to the recipient by name, did not contain any links and were DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) signed to validate their authenticity.

Despite all the safety precaution, letters were sent to spam folder. This happened due to the fact that earlier LinkedIn often sent users messages they didn’t need.

The alerts were sent after the security incident in which hackers stole 6.5 million hashed passwords from a social network database and posted the stolen data online.

LinkedIn administration reported the investigation showed no evidence of any data being compromised. Stolen passwords were published without user names, and all the potential victims were notified of the incident.
