YouTube lost a lawsuit in Germany over music videos

YouTube lost a lawsuit in Germany over music videos

YouTube could pay a huge bill to royalties after losing a lawsuit in Germany over music videos. According to court ruling, YouTube is responsible for the content that users post to the video sharing site.

The court ordered YouTube to install filters to prevent users from posting music clips whose rights are held by royalty collection group, Gema.

During the court hearing the German industry group claimed that YouTube had not done enough to stop copyrighted clips from being posted.

The court case was based on 12 separate music videos posted on YouTube. The ruling concerns only seven of the 12 music videos. If YouTube is forced to pay the royalties for all the clips posted on the site, than the video sharing site will face a huge bill, as Gema represents about 60, 000 German songwriters and composers.

YouTube said it was not responsible for what users post, but responded when told of copyright violations.

"Today's ruling confirms that YouTube as a hosting platform cannot be obliged to control the content of all videos uploaded to the site," said a spokesperson for the video site.

"We remain committed to finding a solution to the music licensing issue in Germany that will benefit artists, composers, authors, publishers and record labels, as well as the wider YouTube community," they added.
