Chinese app stores contain security vulnerabilities

Chinese app stores contain security vulnerabilities

Representatives of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) inform about security vulnerabilities in the application stores run by mobile operators China Mobile and China Telecom. These two operators have a market share of around 80%.

Ministry also scolds state-run operators for not doing more to provide a higher security level for their users. It should be mentioned that malicious mobile apps can be found not only on dubious third party platforms, but also on legitimate sites of operators.

Roy Ko, a consultant at the Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center highlighted that the part of the problem lies with Chinese users themselves, because they often crack software and make it available for free. “Google Play at least has some quality control, but on the other sites you get these cracked apps alongside malicious ones,” he argued.

Ko mentioned that creators of malicious apps aim at stealing data or money, and at turning smartphones into botnets. Ko urges mobile operators to improve the mechanism of users protection, as the number of mobile subscribers is now topping one billion, and cybercriminals will increasingly target them.
