Kelihos.B had found a new and social way to expand

Kelihos.B had found a new and social way to expand

Criminals, who were operating the recently disabled Kelihos botnet, had already begun to create a new network of infected computers. To achieve their goal hackers use social worm malware that is now targeting Facebook users.

On March 28 experts from Kaspersky Labs, CrowdStrike, Dell SecureWorks and the Honeynet Project announced that they managed to gain control over the 110 thousand infected machines. In order to prevent the operators of Kelihos from updating the botnet using P2P infrastructure, the companies needed to install fake botnet clients around the world and make all infected machines connect only to servers controlled by Kaspersky Labs.

Experts from Seculert claim that Kelihos operators paid the creators of the social worm malware, which is already distributed in Facebook, to connect the infected machines to Kelihos. According to experts, 70,000 users can become victims of the botnet.

Moreover hackers may use the worm to regain control over the Kelihos bots because the machines are still infected. Criminals just need to infect the machines under control of Kaspersky Labs for the second time.
