At least 1,5 million Visa and MasterCard credit card numbers were compromised

At least 1,5 million Visa and MasterCard credit card numbers were compromised

At least 1,5 million Visa and MasterCard accounts have been compromised following a security breach at Global Payment, said the company in its statement.

“The company believes that the affected portion of its processing system is confined to North America and less than 1,500,000 card numbers may have been exported”, - CEO Paul Garcia wrote in the statement. He added that credit card numbers may have been stolen, but that cardholder names, addresses and social security numbers weren’t disclosed.

The company representatives said they were working to minimize potential cardholder impact.

"We are making rapid progress toward bringing this issue to a close. Our nearly 4,000 employees around the world are focused on providing exceptional service. We are open for business and continue to process transactions for all of the card brands," - said Garcia.

After the accident Visa removed Global Payments from the list of approved service providers. But Global Payments can re-apply for validation by submitting evidence that its security is in compliance with Visa's standards.

At the same time, a security breach affected Visa network and made some people around the USA stop using their credit and debit cards for about 45 minutes on Sunday.

The estimated window of the breach was between January 21 and February 25. MasterCard and Visa have already informed their costumers of the possible risk the breach may cause.
