Internet Watch Foundation: Paedophiles hide child abuse images in web shops

Internet Watch Foundation presented a report that reveals new tactics of paedophiles, who share child abuse images. Abusers hide such images on websites that look like ordinary web shops.

The IWF is the organization in UK that monitors images of child sexual abuse and helps to get the content removed from British internet service providers and hosting firms.

The sites used by abusers look legitimate, but paedophiles can reach the images via a route, which takes them to a specific section of the site.

IWF managed to find such sites because of the notifications made by members of the public who accidentally stumbled across them. In 2011 such tactics has been used by abusers for 600 times and always on sites outside the UK. IWF claims that people selling child abuse images were able to find them on such sites because they reach the destination via a specific gateway or referrer. A great number of shopping sites use this technique legitimately because it helps repeat visitors to go straight to the department they need without visiting the front page of the site.

According to IWF’s report the number of sites that sell child abuse images was in decline in 2011. In 2009-2010 IWF revealed 998 unique sources of abuse material and in 2011 only 440 of these were operating and no new “top level” source had been identified.
