Duqu development team is still operational

Duqu development team is still operational

According to a Symantec blog post creators of infamous Duqu Trojan are still developing their threat and using it in attacks. The AV researchers discovered only one component of the virus, which drops the rest of the encrypted code. The remaining code rests on the local hard drive until system is rebooted and executes during the startup.

Major changes of the virus are the new encryption algorithm and the absence of signature with a stolen certificate. Virus developers also added detection evade functionality but it did not prove to be a success.

"Although we do not have all of the information regarding this infection, the emergence of this new file does show that the attackers are still active. Without the other components of the attack it is impossible to say whether any new developments have been added to the code since we last saw a release from the group in November 2011," comment Symantec's researchers.

It is considered that Duqu had the same authors that Stuxnet did, or at least developers used the same source code. Stuxnets primary purpose was disruption of Irans nuclear facilities while Duqu is utilized in order to leak information from industrial control systems.

Symantec advisory is accessible here.
