CIA plans to use bugs in home appliances

CIA plans to use bugs in home appliances

CIA director David Petraeus says that “connected” gadgets controlled by apps will change the way modern intelligence agencies work. Police officers will soon have no need to break into people’s houses to plant bugs. Bugs will be built into peoples home appliances, and information from them will be read via Internet or with the help of radio waves.

This week ARM demonstrated a new low-powered chips which will be used in a lot of home appliances, from fridges to doorbells. These new chips are smaller, more powerful and much cheaper than any previously existing processors.

Petraeus claims that web-connected gadgets will 'transform' the art of spying. Transformational is an overused word, but I do believe it properly applies to these technologies, said Petraeus.

CIA plans to merge all ‘connected home appliances into a unified infrastructure under the name of Internet of things.

Privacy groups, such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation, have repeatedly pointed out that the US have no right to collect and use personal information of citizens, including geolocation data. However, the development of modern technologies only contributes to the emergence of devices that can track people.
