Thai authorities block 5 thousand sites insulting royals

Thai authorities block 5 thousand sites insulting royals

Thai police have shut down more than 5 thousand sites in the last three month. All of the sites contained materials insulting the royal family. Some critics claim that such actions of Thai authorities are just an attempt to censor the Internet more harshly.

Press has already announced that some people were arrested in Thailand on accusations of “injured majesty”. If they are found guilty, they will face up to 15 years in prison.

Such action of Thai authorities attracted the attention of the right group Reporters without borders, which put Thailand on its countries under surveillance list. Moreover if the government continues implementing its strict policy than Thailand can join the club of the world’s most repressive countries as regards the internet.

It should be mentioned that Thailand was the first country which began using a new feature on Twitter developed to let the block of tweet at a country level if they infringe the local laws.
