Most of DNS server implementations are vulnerable to DNS-poisoning attacks

A joint study of American and Chineese research teams revealed that most of the DNS implementations are vulnerable to DNS poisoning attacks. Using the discovered flaw cybercrooks could keep the domain names that had been deleted by upper level DNS servers resolvable.

The vulnerability exists due to a cache update logic error, that allows hackers to create so-called “ghost domains”.

The domain servers play critical part in the process of web-surfing because they are used to convert ip-addresses that are hard to remember into plain text.

“Our experiments with 19,045 open DNS servers show that even one week after a domain name has been revoked and its TTL expired, more than 70 per cent of the servers will still resolve it.” – researchers said.

According to the study DNS server implementations by BIND, Microsoft, Google and OpenDNS are all potentially vulnerable. The cybercrooks can use it to conduct fishing attacks, command & control a botnet, promote malware etc., even if the domain name has been deleted a long time ago.
