Lulz Security hackers attack Sun website

Lulz Security hackers attack Sun website

Initially, readers trying to visit thesun.co.uk were redirected to new-times.co.uk, where they could read a false story entitled Media moguls body discovered. The story told that Rupert Murdoch was found dead in his garden after he had ingested a large quantity of palladium.

A computer hacker group Lulz Security, which previously attacked companies including Nintendo, Bethesda Game Studios and Sony, claimed responsibility for targeting Sun website through their Twitter account. Message on groups Twitter said: "Arrest us. We dare you. We are the unstoppable hacking generation...." In response to the attack, News International said it was aware of what was happening.
It is also known that Lulz Security attacked other websites of News International, including the one of The Times newspaper and News Internationals home page.

BBC technology reporter Iain MacKenzie stated that the attack on the Sun was in LulzSecs hacktivist style, meaning they do everything "for the lulz". He said: "Clearly this is not the most significant development in the scandal currently engulfing News International. But the turning of the hacking tables is, at least, curiously ironic sideshow".

The hacktivist group Lulz Security participates in the AntSec movement, meant to oppose to the computer security industry. The general idea behind this is that the computer security industry uses full-disclosure to profit and develop scare-tactics to convince people into buying their firewalls, anti-virus software and auditing services.
