Kino.to Shut Down by Police

Kino.to Shut Down by Police

A popular European video-streaming portal Kino.to has been shut down. During simultaneous raids executed by police officers in Germany, France, Spain and the Netherlands 13 operators of the portal were arrested. One managed to avoid being arrested and is being hunted at the moment. In Germany alone about 250 officers and 17 computer specialists took part in the raids.

At the time of writing site Kino.to displays the following message:

"The domain of the site you are trying to access was closed on suspicion of forming a criminal organization to commit professional copyright infringement."

"Several operators of KINO.TO were arrested."

"Internet users who illegally pirated or distributed copies of films may be subjected to a criminal prosecution."

Spokesman of German Federation Against Copyright Theft (GVU) claims that Kino.to made significant revenue" through a "parasitic business model." Kino.to did not host any illegal content and just served as an index for it. The portal profited from commercial partnerships with third-party companies that hosted the copyrighted movies and TV shows.

Kino.to has been a most visited by German-speaking Internet-users video-streaming site. Each day it attracted four million visitors and it was among the 100 most-visited websites in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
