ISS Lost Connection Because of the Software Update

ISS Lost Connection Because of the Software Update

During the software update of the International Space Station (ISS) computers flight controllers lost connection, which was absent for almost 2 hours.

NASA’s website announced: “Flight controllers were in the process of updating the stations command and control software and were transitioning from the primary computer to the backup computer to complete the software load when the loss of communication occurred”.

Fortunately, flight controllers in Houston, Texas, managed to contact the ISS through Russian ground stations, when it was flying over the other side of the world. Houston experts instructed crew to connect another computer to begin restoration of connection. IT-specialists began to update the on-board computers.

ISS Commander Kevin Ford said the station is now normally functioning.

This was not the first time the space stations computers failed to work. Five years ago NASA reported ISS computers being infected with malicious malware. Fortunately, antivirus software managed to identify the infection and prevent it from spreading.
