The download package for MyBB 1.6.4 was infected with malicious code

The download package for MyBB 1.6.4 was infected with malicious code

The development team of MyBB announced that the download package for version 1.6.4 of MyBB had been modified and contained malicious code. According to MyBB product manager, unidentified hackers used the vulnerability in the MyBB website content management system (CMS), and were able to†inject a malicious code in†one of the files. After that, they executed arbitrary PHP-code and modified the release packages.

It is not known when the attack took place, so all users, who downloaded the MyBB version 1.6.4 prior to†October 6†could become victims. The representatives of the MyBB development team advise all users to check their installations and apply†the patch. Users are also advised to replace the /index.php file and delete the†/install/ directory.

MyBB product manager said that CMS, whose vulnerability was exploited, is configured to isolate the subdomains, which belong to MyBB website. The CMS doesn’t share any code with MyBB, so it is unlikely that there is a vulnerability in MyBB. Representatives of MyBB also doubt that any userТs data from community forum or other sections of the site were compromised.

Researchers from MyBB are taking measures to avoid such security incidents in the future. They plan to publish checksums with future downloads to enable the early revealing of the modified files. But this would not help much if the attackers have control of the server, which stores the checksums. The best measure would be digital signatures, as they canТt be forged without a secret key.
